ARE WE SOON TO GET OUR OWN TRUMP

Michael O’Leary of Shark Tanks fame has announced that he will run for head of the Progressive Conservative party to replace Stephen Harper in Canada.
DRAGON CO-STAR BURNS O’LEARY – Arlene Dickinson says the man seeking to be PM has a ‘total lack of empathy’
Kevin O’Leary’s a narcissistic, opportunistic self-promoter who lacks empathy and who’d be a bust as prime minister, his former co-star on the reality show Dragons’ Den says.
O’Leary announced this week he’s running for the Conservative leadership, and he clearly can’t count on the vote of Arlene Dickinson, who worked alongside him for seven years on the television show.“You get a window into somebody’s character by the way they treat people, particularly those who are vulnerable and need help or guidance,” Dickinson wrote in an article for cbc.ca.
“Kevin’s total lack of empathy toward these Canadians who put their heart and soul on the line, I can assure you, was genuine,” wrote Dickinson, a Calgary-based entrepreneur and best-selling author. Dickinson said in an interview with CBC that O’Leary went so far as to chide her for showing compassion towards others. “You have to have compassion and empathy and that’s something I never saw him use,” she said later in a CBC interview. “The only filter Kevin ever applied was whether or not he was going to make money.” O’Leary told the Star in an interview that his past decade of public comments were great television, but shouldn’t necessarily be considered his positions as he runs for leadership. “Absurd policy, great television,” O’Leary said of his 2014 comments that it was “fantastic” that 85 people owned as much as the 3.5 billion poorest in the world, as it would inspire the poor to get rich. Dickinson said O’Leary is like incoming U.S. president Donald Trump through “the bravado, the lack of awareness of other people’s circumstances, the desire to have it all about himself.” She left little doubt she’s not seeking a spot on his campaign team.
“I don’t want a leader that’s only in it for themselves,” she wrote. “I do not want a leader who will cut and run when it’s in his best interest. I don’t want a leader who views our country as nothing more than a balance sheet.” She said there are other leadership candidates to choose from. “Whatever your political stripe, I’ve found Canadians to be compassionate and caring people,” Dickenson wrote. “Canadians deserve a compassionate and caring person to lead their country. Conservatives have several candidates to choose from. Kevin O’Leary shouldn’t be one of them.”

CANADA’S MILITARY CONTRIBUTIONS

Salute to a brave and modest nation – Kevin Myers , ‘The Sunday Telegraph’ LONDON :

Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan , probably almost no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops are deployed in the region.

And as always, Canada will bury its dead, just as the rest of the world, as always will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.. It seems that Canada ‘s historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored.

Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again.

That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North American continent with the United States , and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global conflicts.

For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different directions: It seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the gratitude it deserved.

Yet it’s purely voluntary contribution to the cause of freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy. Almost 10% of Canada ‘s entire population of seven million people served in the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle.

Canada was repaid for its enormous sacrifice by downright neglect, it’s unique contribution to victory being absorbed into the popular memory as somehow or other the work of the ‘British.’

The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy began the war with a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of the Atlantic against U-boat attack. More than 120 Canadian warships participated in the Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers went ashore on D-Day alone.

Canada finished the war with the third-largest navy and the fourth largest air force in the world. The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference as it had the previous time.

Canadian participation in the war was acknowledged in film only if it was necessary to give an American actor a part in a campaign in which the United States had clearly not participated – a touching scrupulousness which, of course, Hollywood has since abandoned, as it has any notion of a separate Canadian identity.

So it is a general rule that actors and filmmakers arriving in Hollywood keep their nationality – unless, that is, they are Canadian. Thus Mary Pickford, Walter Huston, Donald Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, William Shatner, Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg, Alex Trebek, Art Linkletter, Mike Weir and Dan Aykroyd have in the popular perception become American, and Christopher Plummer, British.

It is as if, in the very act of becoming famous, a Canadian ceases to be Canadian, unless she is Margaret Atwood, who is as unshakably Canadian as a moose, or Celine Dion, for whom Canada has proved quite unable to find any takers.

Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the achievements of its sons and daughters as the rest of the world is completely unaware of them. The Canadians proudly say of themselves – and are unheard by anyone else – that 1% of the world’s population has provided 10% of the world’s peacekeeping forces.

Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been the greatest peacekeepers on Earth – in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six on non-UN peacekeeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to Bosnia.

Yet the only foreign engagement that has entered the popular non-Canadian imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia , in which out-of-control paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators. Their regiment was then disbanded in disgrace – a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for which, naturally, the Canadians received no international credit.

So who today in the United States knows about the stoic and selfless friendship its northern neighbor has given it in Afghanistan ?

Rather like Cyrano de Bergerac , Canada repeatedly does honorable things for honorable motives, but instead of being thanked for it, it remains something of a figure of fun. It is the Canadian way, for which Canadians should be proud, yet such honor comes at a high cost. This past year more grieving Canadian families knew that cost all too tragically well.

Lest we forget.

CDN DOLLAR — Effect on manufacturing

Well, our good friends in Ottawa continue to tell us that the fall in the Canadian dollar is having a positive effect on Canadian manufacturing.  Just not true.

Lets look at some of the issues:

  • Most of the manufacturing that we lost over the last 20 years will never return because the cost of capital equipment to start manufacturing here again is so high that it is just no longer viable to retool plants and equipment.
  • Companies need markets to sell products to and those markets are already established. Exploring and cultivating new foreign markets is a costly and time consuming endeavor that  most companies are not willing to undertake.
  • The Federal Gov’t blames the drop in the Cdn Dollar on the fall of crude oil prices but suggest this is only temporary and that they expect to see a recovery in 2016. Does that mean that the Cdn Dollar will recover as well which if true means that Canada would become less competitive on the world market.  What company would start manufacturing here again based on a  scenario like that from our federal government.
  • Ronald Reagan and Brian Mulroney started “NAFTA” and Harper has now signed 22 free trade agreements since becoming Prime Minister. Only one of those has shown a positive trade balance while the rest have just managed to cut more jobs here in Canada.
  • One last thought.  Look at all the packaged food products you buy today.  Most packaged foods now come from the US and with the drop in the Cdn dollar, all of those prices are going up. The labels are deceptive however. Many will say “Packaged for ***XYZ*** Company in Canada, but few say by who or where.  Of course the Federal Gov’t changed the regulations 3 years ago eliminating the need to put the manufacturing source on the label.
  • Manufacturing in Canada can only succeed if we drastically improve our production efficiency and stop relying on a drop in the Cdn dollar to make us successful.
  • It appears to me that the Federal Governments plan is to eliminate the middle class and have seventy percent of our workforce employed in the low wage retail and fast food sectors.

GAS PRICES — Here we go again!

I just can not say enough about this.  Gas prices in the USA are now the lowest they have been in 15 years. Gas prices in Canada continue to be 30 – 40 cents per litre above what they should be if you were to convert the US gallon to litres,  add currency exchange and see what the result would be.  The oil companies continue to rip us off and the federal government is so entrenched in support of the oil companies, that it  does nothing to help Canadians because they just love the increased tax revenue they get by keeping the prices high.

Just remember the oil companies sell our oil to the US in US dollars eliminating any effect the Canadian dollar might have. Then they sell the gasoline to us in Cdn dollars making sure we get hosed every time we fill up.

Very frustrating.

EDUCATION — USA (No better than Ontario)

Fox News in the US recently did a limited survey and evaluation of primary education facilities an effort to determine if there was a broad difference among various educational facilities.  The study included three main groups.

Publicly funded education facilities grades 4 – 7

Charter school facilities grades 4 – 7

Private school facilities grades 4 – 7

The study,  while far from being comprehensive with, as I understand a very limited number of participants turned up some interesting results.

Private schools in all grades scored 2 1/2 times better than public schools and charter schools scored 1.7 times better than public schools.

Class duration in the private schools averaged 32 hours instruction time per week and 4 hours of weekly homework.

Class duration in the charter schools averaged 31 hours instruction time per week and 4 hours of weekly homework.

Class duration in the public schools averaged 27 hours instruction per week and 2 hours of weekly homework.

Average class sizes were 28 for private, 31 for charter and 24 for public.

Only the public schools had unionized teachers and the salaries for the teachers ranked highest for public schools followed by charter and private schools basically tied.

Ontario’s public education system grades 1 – 12 in my opinion is far behind what is available in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

There is no question that our public education system is run by the big unions and until we come to grips and take control away from these unions we will always lag behind most other parts of the world.  Don’t ever believe the statistics the Provincial Government provides because they are heavily biased and spun to satisfy their needs.

I know of kids in grades 6 & 7 that don’t know the Provinces or capitals of those provinces and clearly are disfunctional when it comes to basic math.

Certainly food for thought.

HARPER JUST LOVES….Taxing Us

It’s Election Time… Think about the taxes that your current governments force us to pay.

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he’s fed.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won’t be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He’s good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he’s laid.

When he’s gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 60 years ago, & our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.  We had absolutely no national debt, had a large middle class, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What in “Hell” happened to Canada? Can you spell ‘GREEDY politicians?’

I hope this goes around CANADA at least 100 times. YOU can help it get there.

ONTARIO EDUCATION DISASTER

One month into the summer and yet nothing has been done to resume the Teachers / Government discussions as September rapidly approaches.  It is absolutely disgusting to think that this government and these teacher unions have absolutely no respect for the students in this province.

Liz Sandals should resign or be fired now.  The unions ought to be shut down and or banned from representing teachers in this province.  Thousands of very good teachers are completely fed up with their union leaders and at the same time are afraid to speak. Let’s face it. Teachers are overpaid, over benefited, under-worked,  and protected from any incompetence that they display.  They have no idea how good they have it compared to the private sector in this province.

Time to do what Ronald Regan did to the Air Traffic Controllers in the US.. Fire all of the teachers get rid of the union, bring back the good ones and start over with real eductation in this province.

But at the end of the day, our government will cave in, give them most of what they want and try to spin it to their benefit.

Watch out taxpayers.. You are going to get hit big time again.

THEATRE SHOOTING….Again

It happens again. Two ladies killed and 6 others injured in a random shooting attack at a theatre in Lafayette Louisianna.  Be thankful that no one in the theatre decided to pull a gun and starting shooting back or many more would have been injured and or killed. The gunman, a mentally unstable individual acquired the weapon from a pawn shop locally.

According to one commentator on Fox News, only two people were killed so not really a big deal.

So far this year there have been over 240 mass shootings (defined as a shooting where 4 or more people shot in the same incident),  this year up to July 1.  At that rate there will be close to 500 mass shootings this year in the US..  In 2014 there were 445 in the USA. This year in Canada we have had “0” mass shootings to date and in 2014 we had 2.

Does no-one in the USA have enough intelligence to understand that just having so many guns really adds to this high shooting rate.

I don’t think that the US will ever come to the realization that lives are important and that guns with everyone just adds to the killing of so many innocent people.

PAN AM GAMES — HOV Fiasco

This is going to be a real disaster when it comes to people trying to get in and out of Toronto during the Pan Am Games.

The games spread over the course of about a month will see some roughly 6000 athletes (double that for coaches & trainers), come to our city. These venues will be spread all over Southern Ontario from Thorold to Milton the Lakeshore area, downtown Toronto and up to Markham and east to Oshawa.

Within that area 450,000 commuters use the major highways of the QEW, Gardiner Expressway, 427, 401, 403, 410 & Don Valley Parkway daily.  Other than minimal parts of the 427, 403, DVP and QEW the greatest portion of these roads do not have HOV lanes.

Now we are adding HOV lanes all the way from Niagara through all areas of Toronto and a very long way up the DVP.  And at the same time we are changing the rules from 2 persons in the car to 3.  That in itself puts back roughly 90% of all people using HOV lanes today into the non HOV category.

What dingbat decided that 6000 athletes needed to basically shut down our whole highway infrastructure for a full month.

Traffic chaos will be like we have never seen it. We will drive tourism to downtown Toronto out of the city.  Many Ontario people will no longer drive into the city to view the games. Does that mean that one of the reasons for poor ticket sales is lousy traffic planning.

ONTARIO TEACHERS — WORK TO RULE…Really?

Well the teachers union continues to fight with the government and say that they will only work to rule.  NO REPORT CARDS, NO EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, NO EXTRA STUDENT HELP… But wait a minute. How about school excursions?

Well how about this?

  • No problem taking the students to “CANADA’S WONDERLAND”
  • No problem taking the students to “RIPLEYS AQUARIUM”
  • No problem taking the students to “SPRINGHILL FARMS”
  • No problem taking the students to “METRO TORONTO ZOO”
  • No problem taking the students to “TORONTO ISLAND”
  • No problem taking the students to “LEGOLAND”
  • No problem taking the students to “AFRICAN LION SAFARI”

Give parents a break. You can take students to all of these places while under “WORK TO RULE”, but you can’t help them with extra work or properly document their progress.

Be ashamed teachers. It is time we took your union down and put education back in the hands of the parents and teachers interested in truly teaching.
